Tree Spirits are hostile melee mobs that are spawned by Dead Trees.
Tree Spirits do not spawn naturally, and instead are spawned when a Dead Tree is attacked.
Tree Spirits are melee mobs that will follow targets both on land and in water. They will initially attempt to avoid getting into the water where possible, but will go in if they find no other path to their target.
They are aggressive, and will attack nearby players within 16 blocks without provocation. If attacked by another entity, they will retaliate and continue targeting that entity.
Staying outside of their targeting range will prevent them from attacking or targeting entities.
When a Tree Spirit successfully attacks an entity, it will deal heavy knockback and apply slowness for 2.5 seconds.

Dead Trees are passive disguise entities that spawn naturally in the Overworld.
Dead Trees spawn naturally in forest, and forest hills biomes in the Overworld.
They will only spawn during the day, and like most other mobs; their spawning can be prevented by placing torches or other lighting blocks nearby to raise the light level above 7.
Dead Trees attempt to imitate oak logs as closely as possible; aligning with normal blocks, and positioning centered on the block they're standing on. They remain completely motionless on the ground, and will not attack. Upon being hit, it will immediately turn into its Tree Spirit form and retaliate.
While in its dead tree form, it will not collide with other entities, or be moved around by liquids.
