The Explosive Gems's only use is for spawning C.R.E.E.P.

When used on a Creep Altar, C.R.E.E.P. will spawn. This will consume the Explosive Gems. If spawned on Peaceful difficulty, C.R.E.E.P. will despawn immediately, so it is important to ensure that the world is not on Peaceful difficulty.
